Cash and jewellery reportedly worth Rs 23 lakh was robbed from a trader’s house in broad daylight in New Usmanpur area of Northeast Delhi on Friday morning.
Robbers swept the lockers clean of jewellery and cash after taking a six-month-old hostage.
When seven armed assailants barged into the house of Pawan Kumar Jain,62,in street number 7 of Gautampuri,nine members of family were present,said the police.
Jain’s wife,three sons,three daughters-in-law and six-month-old grandson,Kush,were all at home.
The assailants locked the main entrance from inside,the police said. “They first took the baby and the women to one part of the house at gunpoint. Then they asked the men to quietly hand over the keys to the lockers.”
The police said after some time,the baby was separated from the other “hostages”,and taken out of the house with a gun pointed at his stomach. After the robbers left,he was found lying near the main door.
Relatives of the Jains claimed that cash and jewellery worth Rs 23 lakh was robbed from the house. Deepak Garg,a relative of the family said,“Rs 4.3 lakh in cash,gold worth Rs 16 lakh and silver worth Rs 3 lakh was stolen.”
The police,however,claimed the value of the robbed items was much less.
Garg also alleged the police had not been not very helpful. “An SHO who came to our house said that he did not have a magic wand to solve the case. Other officers asked meaningless questions. It took more than seven hours to file the FIR,” Garg said.
The family is planning to meet the Lieutenant Governor Tejendra Khanna in connection with the spate in crime in the locality,he said.
The Jains have a wholesale ghee business and stay in a double-storeyed house in Gautampuri.
Joint Commissioner of Police,New Delhi range,Dharmendra Kumar said,“We have identified three assailants and they will be arrested soon.”
