Karan Pandey, the 19-year-old man who died on Saturday night after police firing, succumbed to internal bleeding from bullet injury, according to the preliminary assessment of the team of doctors who conducted his post-mortem examination on Monday evening.

Till Wednesday evening, sources said the post-mortem report had not been officially handed over to police. Sources said the post-mortem findings did not provide any evidence to discount the police version of events — that the bullet that was aimed at the tyre, hit Karan’s lower back instead.

However, sources said analysis of the possible range of firing, and other details will be ascertained in the ballistic report that will come out later.

A medical board comprising a team of three doctors, including two from Lok Nayak Hospital under the Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC),and one from Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital under the University College of Medical Sciences conducted the autopsy on MAMC premises. Sources said according to their initial analysis of the trajectory of the bullet,it appeared that the bullet had entered Karan’s body from the lower back, piercing his liver and spleen, grazing his arm and the leg of his friend Puneet Sharma.

“The bullet has pierced internal organs,so there was a lot of bleeding, which led to his death. This is usually the case in bullet injuries. The victim’s clothes and viscera samples will be preserved for detailed laboratory examination,” an official said.

The driver of the vehicle,Puneet, who had been admitted at RML Hospital immediately after the incident, had tested positive for alcohol, according to the police.
