A day after a 33-year-old Australian tourist was found dead under mysterious circumstances in the Paharganj area of Central Delhi, the police suspect he committed suicide. A suicide note has, however, not been recovered and the police have not ruled out the possibility of a drug overdose.

The deceased, identified as Julian Stanford,a tourist from Sydney, was staying in room no. 303 at Hotel Express 66. The management at the hotel said an attendant found Stanford lying unconscious with froth coming out of his mouth on Sunday evening.

“The attendant repeatedly knocked on his door but there was no response. We used a master key to get inside and found him unconscious. When we saw froth coming out of his mouth,we immediately called the police,” Rohit Singh,a staff member at the hotel, said.

A senior police officer said on condition of anonymity that: “He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. We suspect he consumed some poisonous substance that resulted in his death. However, the area is known for drug peddlers,so we cannot rule out a drug overdose. We are waiting for the postmortem report.”

Joint Commissioner of Police (Northern Range) Karnail Singh said: “We are investigating the matter. Once the postmortem report is available, the cause of death will become clear.”

Stanford had arrived in India on April 4 along with his girlfriend Georgia. “He had been staying at the hotel since then. He did check out for one or two days twice during his stay in Delhi. We don’t know where he used to go. He checked in again on Friday. On Sunday morning,he went to the Indira Gandhi International Airport to see off his girlfriend, who left for Australia. The couple had a heated argument before they left for the airport,” another hotel staff member said on condition of anonymity.

The staffer added that when Stanford came back from the airport,he bolted the door from inside.
