With a million dreams and stars in their eyes,a contingent of 65 athletes and coaches from India is ready to take on the competition at the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games at Boise in Idaho,United States. But more important for these young participants is not the vision of a medal-winning performance, but simply getting the opportunity to hold their own despite their disabilities.

At the send-off ceremony on Tuesday, there were no nerves prevalent as the kids arrived in bunches, smiling, and with parents in tow. “The children are all very excited, and they aren’t nervous at all, even though many of them are going out of the country for the first time, and so far away. But hopefully we’ll put in a good show,” said a Special Olympics official.

In the previous edition of the meet in Japan,India ended in fifth place in the medals tally — not bad at all considering they were taking part for the first time.

The athletes did their training and preparation for the tournament in Shimla. This time around, alpine skiing, snow boarding and shoeing have been included for the first time.
