Days after a 47-year-old sexual assault accused succumbed to his injuries after allegedly being denied treatment at four government hospitals following a road accident, Delhi Health Department has recommended suspension against four doctors from Guru Tegh Bahadur (GTB) Hospital and Lok Nayak Hospital for denying treatment to him “despite having beds”.

According to official sources, following the death of Pramod, the health department, coming down heavily upon the management at the two hospitals, asked the CMOs concerned to submit a report in the matter. “They have been asked to report as to when did the patient come to the hospitals, the doctor who attended to him, the time he spent waiting to get treatment, CCTV footage, and the doctor on duty who allegedly denied treatment and admission to the patient,” they added.

The department will also write to the Delhi Medical Council (DMC) to inform the body about the alleged medical negligence. “The patient was first taken to JPC hospital where he was intubated and sent to GTB…GTB hospital then sent him to LNJP….One of the hospitals refused to give the patient even a stretcher to lie on while waiting for a doctor. This is a basic facility one hospital has to provide in emergency cases…We also got information that the hospitals had vacant beds and despite that, they refused to admit the patient..,” a source said.

Sources further said, “Be it an accused or any other person, a hospital should provide treatment to people from any background…”
Said a source, “We will also be writing to DMC for medical negligence… The recommendation for disciplinary action and suspension against the four doctors (two from GTB and two from LNJP) will be sent to the National Capital Civil Services Authority (NCCSA) for further approval,” said the senior official. NCCSA is a three-member committee chaired by the Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and two members — the Chief Secretary and Principal Secretary, Home.

The incident took place on Tuesday when the accused was being taken to the police station in a PCR van. However, he opened the window of the vehicle and tried to jump out in a bid to flee from the police. As a result, he fell on the road and sustained head injuries.
