Former National Under-17 Champion Saravana Krishnan registered his third win against a Grandmaster in the Gurgaon International Open Grandmasters Chess Tournament on Monday,getting past Kazakh GM Petr Kostenko in the seventh round. He had earlier defeated Grandmasters Evgeny Gleizerov of Russia and Nurlan Ibrayev of Kazakhstan respectively.

For the three Ukrainian players in the fray,though,it was a winning day as all of them registered emphatic victories. Top seed Alexander Areshchenko defeated overnight joint leader M Lalith Babu in 35 moves and jumped to sole lead with 6.5 points while second seed Grandmaster Yuriy Kuzubov overcame International Master PDS Girinath and Yuri Solodovnichenko got the better of Bangladesh Grandmaster Niaz Murshed.

Indian GM Neelotpal Das defeated SP Sethuraman and is now tied second on six points with Yuriy Kuzubov,Yuri Solodovnichenko,RR Laxman and Deep Sengupta. Laxman defeated International Master Arghyadip Das while Deep Sengupta got the better of Grandmaster norm holder Prathamesh Mokal.

In other upsets of the day,BS Shivananda beat Uzbek Grandmaster Safin Shukhrat while young Rahul Sangma beat his fancied Indian rival,Grandmaster Praveen Thipsay and Shashikant Kutwal held highly rated Russian Grandmaster Mikhail Ulibin to a draw.
