Friends, family members and relatives of Khurshid Anwar, executive director of a non-governmental organisation who was accused of rape, held a condolence meeting on Saturday. The meeting was held in the open air theatre at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).

Among those who attended the meeting, which began around 4.30 pm,were Dr Ali Javed (Anwar’s brother),journalist Saeed Naqvi and Ajay Patnaik (a member of JNU teachers’ association). Patnaik held “the media trial” responsible for Anwar’s suicide.

“The rape law has become draconian. One word against you and what chance do you have? Had you known Anwar personally, you wouldn’t have believed these allegations,” a woman lecturer at JNU said.

A government official, who said he and Anwar were friends since their JNU days, said,“If this can happen to a man like him who has done so much for society,God knows what all can happen to the rest of us.”

Teesta Setalvad, activist and journalist, was also present at the meeting.
