It was early this year that Delhi-based guitarist-composer Shubh Saran decided to work on a musical outfit that would bring together musicians of various genres and eclectic tastes. He mixed jazz and funk with doses of neo soul and a sprinkling of Hindustani classical nuances, and called it The Group Project. On Monday evening at Kamani auditorium, the group enthralled the audience with their fusion numbers. Apart from Saran, there was bassist Abhishek Mangla, drummer Nikhil Vasudevan (of The Ska Vengers fame),pianist Rohit Gupta and Derek Beckvold on the saxophone. Tarun Balani of three-piece act Adi Suhail Tarun (AST) and Chayan Adhikari, the vocalist of Delhi band Advaita, joined the boys for a few tracks too. Sarod player Sashank Navaladi added the Indian fusion aspect to the bands playlist. Apart from treating the audience to some groovy original compositions such as Sunday,Security and Middle of Somewhere, the group also kept everyone happy with a couple of covers of popular songs too during their 90-minute-long performance.
