A 17-year-old boy in Aligarh shot himself dead allegedly after his father refused to buy him an iPhone, police said on Saturday.
The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon when the family was asleep. Police said the boy went up to the roof of his house with a pistol and pulled the trigger.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Station House Officer (SHO) of Roravar Police Station, Inspector Vijay Singh, said the boy asked for an iPhone, but his father scolded him. “Prima facie, it appears that as he was scolded over the phone, he decided to take his life,” said Singh.

The SHO said that after he was scolded, the boy left home on Tuesday night in a fit of rage. Police said he was later found in Ghaziabad and brought back home.
“On Tuesday night, the boy’s friend came to the police station and said he had left his home and was calling him from unknown numbers to update his location,” said the SHO.
“He told us that the boy had come to meet him before leaving. He immediately informed the boy’s mother. But by the time she came to his home, the boy had left,” said the SHO.
The SHO said the boy’s father, a property dealer, then filed a complaint. An FIR was registered under Section 137 (2)(kidnapping) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and a team was sent to trace the boy.

“The teenager again called his friend from a hotel near Bulandshahr. We traced his location… Finally, our team traced him to Ghaziabad’s Kaushambi Metro station,” Singh said.
Police said he got to Ghaziabad by hitching a ride with people.
The SHO said that by 6 am on Wednesday, the boy was brought back home. “He took a shower and ate. He even picked up his younger sister from school. Around 2.30 pm, he went up to the roof with the pistol and shot himself,” he said.
“Hearing the sound, the family rushed upstairs and found the teenager lying in a pool of blood. They rushed him to a private hospital, from where he was referred to JN Medical College. There, the doctors declared him dead,” added the SHO.
Singh said the teenager was a Class 12 student.
