Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Friday rallied behind over 50,000 residents of Vasant Kunj who have complained of acute noise pollution caused by aircraft landing or take off from the third runway of the IGI Airport. “I don’t want 50,000 deaf people in Delhi,” Dikshit said.

According to the residents of Vasant Kunj, aircraft landing and take-off from the new runway result in noise pollution that often exceeds the limit prescribed by the Central Pollution Control Board.

Dikshit while speaking at an aviation seminar said she had written to the Civil Aviation Ministry last week urging it to ensure that the concerned authorities put up sound barriers.

Residents of the upmarket locality had filed a petition with the government alleging that the Environment Ministry cleared the third runway for construction without going through the mandatory checks.

The Environment Ministry has, however, maintained that all formalities were adhered to.

While the Ministry said a survey had indicated that noise pollution levels around the residential area was 5l to 57 decibels (dB) and 65 to 85 dB on the runway, residents claimed that the sound level was around 90 decibels.
