Aruna Chadha, who along with former Haryana minister Gopal Kanda has been accused of abetting the suicide of a 23-year-old air hostess, was granted interim bail till November 15 by a Delhi court on Monday.

The former air hostess, who worked for the now defunct MDLR airlines, owned by Kanda, had named both Chadha and Kanda in her suicide note.

Additional Sessions Judge M C Gupta, who is presiding over the special fast track court that deals with cases pertaining to sexual offences against women, allowed the interim bail plea of Chadha. Chadha had sought relief on the grounds that she was a “single mother” and that in her absence there was no one to look after her minor daughter. Moreover, the defence counsel had argued,Chadha’s parents were both elderly and unwell and needed looking after.

Chadha, who was arrested on August 8,2012,had sought interim bail also on the ground that her regular bail plea has been pending in court for a long time. Her counsel also pointed out that she had been in police custody for over a year.

The trial for the case began on May 27,when the court recorded the statements of eight witnesses, including police personnel and the doctor who had conducted the air hostess’ post-mortem examination. Both Chadha and Kanda have been charged with forgery and harming the reputation of the victim.

The air hostess was found dead at her Ashok Vihar residence,Northwest Delhi,on August 5,2012. In her suicide note, she said she was ending her life due to “harassment” by Kanda and Chadha.

In the chargesheet, police stated that Kanda was obsessed with the victim and was putting pressure on her to return to his company. He was arrested on August 18 last year.
