It would be submitted to Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad in the coming week, officials said. Azad is president of the institute.

Under the redevelopment plan, faculty members residing at the institute will be shifted to Ayurvigyan Nagar in South Delhi to decongest the premises. The Animal House Building, which occupies 5 acres, will also be relocated to accommodate research areas and libraries. The plan also leaves 40 per cent campus area for ‘green space’.

AIIMS Deputy Director (Administration) Sailesh Yadav said: “The first phase of redevelopment includes the residential plan for quarters at Ayurvigyan Nagar. This plan was approved by the institute and submitted to NDMC a few months back and we are waiting for the civic body’s approval. The second part will be shown to the AIIMS president soon — it is about using the institute’s land which will be cleared once residential quarters are moved.”

Yadav said construction will begin on the five blocks for which sites are available once all approvals come in. “We hope the new plan will decongest the institute and make it more patient-friendly,” he said. “The internal traffic system will also be changed accordingly.”

Under the 11th five-year plan, the institute was granted a budget of Rs 1,461 crore for development purpose.

The proposal includes constructing a separate block for testing and screening of patients. “The centralised laboratories will ensure that patients do not have to run around to get tests done,” Yadav said. “Right now, each test is done in a different area (but) we intend to bring it all together.”
