Five doctors of the All India Institute Of Medical Science (AIIMS) are facing disciplinary action after an internal probe panel found them guilty of lapses in the treatment of a 20-year-old dengue patient, who died at the hospital nearly a month ago.
Family members of the patient, Bharat Agaria, had alleged that he had not relieved proper treatment at the hospital. Agaria, the son of an AIIMS staffer, passed away on August 31.
Agaria’s family claimed that he had been sent back home twice before finally being admitted to the hospital.

Agaria’s sister had met Union Health Minister J P Nadda on September 24, after which the latter sought an action taken report from AIIMS authorities.
The hospital had formed a committee, headed by Dr V K Paul, chief of AIIMS’s pediatrics department, to probe the case and ascertain if there were lapses on the part of doctors who treated Agaria.
The panel, in its report, stated that one assistant professor had not followed up on the patient after getting him admitted, while another had not played a proactive role in managing the case, said sources.
“A senior resident doctor has been served show-cause notice for lack of post-admission involvement after the patient was shifted to the ICU,” said an AIIMS official.
The report submitted by the committee also stated that a junior resident gave “excessive anti-hypertensive medicines” to the patient without consulting the chief medical officer.
Another junior resident allegedly gave him a painkiller without conducting a clinical evaluation first, stated the panel’s report.
However, the committee has not found any “criminal intent” on the part of the five doctors, including two assistant professors, said AIIMS spokesperson Dr Amit Gupta.
Hospital authorities are now awaiting the responses of the five doctors to the show cause notices before taking further action, he added.
Meanwhile, officials of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) claimed that AIIMS had been sent 17 notices and ‘challaned’ nine times for having areas conducive to the breeding of mosquitoes within its premises.
Two weeks ago, the civic body had also sent a notice to the AIIMS director for violating provisions of the NDMC Act.
