A 34-year-old junior doctor from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) was found dead under mysterious circumstances in his hostel room on the hospital premises. Police said according to initial probe, there does not seem to be any foul play and that the death might be due to drug overdose.

Police said Kumar Kunal was a junior doctor in the Medicine department and hailed from Bihar. Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Prem Nath said his room was bolted from inside. He added that Kumar had not been reporting to work for past three days.

“Some injections and drugs were recovered from his room. It seems he was a drug addict. But we are investigating the case from all angles,” said Nath. The body has been sent for a postmortem examination and his family has been informed about the incident, said police.

The incident came to light when AIIMS security staff found that the door of Kunal’s room locked for the past three days. They informed the police on Thursday afternoon. A team reached the spot and broke open the door. Kunal’s body was lying on the floor, said a police officer. Kunal’s parents reached Delhi Thursday evening. Police said, so far, his family and friends have not been able to shed light on what led to his death.
