A city court on Friday sent a member-secretary of the AICTE and another middleman to three days police custody for allegedly seeking a bribe in return for conducting a favourable inspection of an engineering college in Andhra Pradesh.
Noting that the accused needed to be interrogated in order to unearth the conspiracy, the special CBI judge O P Saini remanded Prof K Narayan Rao,and the middleman S B Subba Rao to police custody till July 20. The two were arrested earlier this week by the CBI for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 5 lakh in return for inspecting and granting approval to an engineering college in Hyderabad.
According to the CBI,a trap was laid following a complaint by Laxmi Kant Reddy,a partner in Vijay Educational Society. The probe agency claimed the AICTEs member-secretary had demanded Rs 35 lakh from Reddy.
Cash amounting to Rs 9 lakh and documents related to bank accounts and properties were recovered by the CBI from Narayan Raos residence in New Delhi. The defense counsel for Narayan Rao,however, argued that the investigating agency had not arrested the accused while taking the money.
