Days after two pedestrians were killed in a hit-and-run in West Delhi’s Moti Nagar, a 20-year-old youth was arrested on Friday for allegedly driving the car involved in the accident, police said.
Police said the accused, Sumit Kumar, a resident of Sonipat in Haryana, was arrested during the investigation under sections 281 and 125(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The case pertains to the incident on Wednesday in which a car hit two men.The car was later found abandoned at the spot.
The two men injured in the crash—a 48-year-old resident of Anand Parbat and a 74-year-old man from Zakhira — succumbed to their injuries during treatment at RML Hospital.
According to police, the car’s owner–Sanjay Kumar—appeared before investigators and stated that his son, Sumit, had been driving the car at the time of the accident.
Further, police also said that Sumit admitted to driving the vehicle and was subsequently apprehended.
During questioning, Sumit was asked to produce his driving licence and the vehicle’s insurance documents, but he failed to do so, police said. Following this, investigators added Section 3 and 181 of the Motor Vehicles Act, which deals with driving without a valid licence.
Police said further action was also initiated against the owner of the vehicle. Since Sanjay had permitted his son to drive the car despite the lack of a valid licence and insurance, sections 5 and 180 along with sections 146 and 196 of the Motor Vehicles Act have been invoked against him as well. Police added that the investigation in the case is continuing, and necessary legal proceedings are underway.
