On March 21, Butta Singh walked into the Uttam Nagar police station to report a theft of Rs 1 lakh at his house. On Sunday, he was arrested for allegedly executing it, the Delhi Police said.

According to the police, Singh, a 45-year-old AC mechanic, had mounting debts to repay and allegedly decided to steal his wife’s jewellery.

In his complaint, he claimed that a gold set, a gold mangalsutra, two gold rings, one gold chain, and cash worth Rs 45,000 were stolen from his house on March 21, between 3 pm and 6 pm. An FIR was registered based on his complaint.

While checking Singh’s house, police said their team didn’t find any signs of forced entry. When police questioned Singh’s wife, Inderjeet Kaur, she said she was the one who informed him about the theft

“Around 3 pm, Kaur left the house to purchase some groceries and other household items. When she returned home, she found her jewellery was missing. She said there were two keys to the door — one was with her and the other was with her husband,” DCP (Dwarka) Ankit Singh said.

Police then checked CCTV footage from a camera in the area — the only one seen around the house between 3 pm and 6 pm was Singh. “He was seen entering the building at 3.20 pm and leaving after 9 minutes. The team got suspicious and picked up the husband,” DCP Singh said.

When police went through Singh’s phone, they found WhatsApp messages from a financing company that suggested he had pledged his wife’s gold articles against a loan.

“Singh then admitted to the crime. He said he had purchased his repair shop in 2022 on a loan from a financer. He then invested Rs 1 lakh on renovation and in buying other electrical items. He then bought a seven-seater taxi on a bank loan for income but this investment resulted in a huge loss. Singh took another loan but could not overcome his bad fortune,” the DCP said.

Singh admitted he allegedly stole his wife’s jewellery and to avoid suspicion falling on him, he filed a complaint, police said.
