A man was arrested on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday on charges of raping a 21-year-old woman.

The woman alleged that her yoga teacher, who claimed to be associated with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), had allegedly raped her for the past one year in West Delhi’s Paschim Vihar. The party, however, maintained that he was not a member.

The woman approached police with her complaint on Friday, after which a case was registered. She recorded her statement the same day before a magistrate.

The accused, Aftab Siddiqui, was arrested hours later. The police recorded his statement and account of the events.

“We registered a case under sections 376 (rape), 328 (causing hurt by means of poison, etc., with intent to commit an offence) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC on the basis of her statement. Aftab was arrested hours after the FIR was registered,” deputy commissioner of police (West) Pushpendra Kumar said.

In her complaint, the police said the woman alleged that Aftab used to call her to his room on the pretext of teaching her yoga. He then sedated her and raped her. Aftab allegedly threatened her with dire consequences on the basis of his association with the AAP.

The woman also alleged that Aftab videographed the act. Police said Aftab continued to ask her for sexual favours even after she got married by threatening to leak the videos online.

Police said Aftab used to record the act on his mobile phone and store them on his computer. The woman was forced to register her complaint with police after the videos were leaked last week.

Police are still verifying if the video was leaked online or only to a few select persons.

Police said they have retrieved the videos from Aftab’s computer. However, Aftab — who is to get married in two months — claimed he had sent his computer for re-formatting to a store where the video was leaked from. This is yet to be verified, a police officer said.

Aftab held yoga classes for residents in the area where the woman lives, police said. She was one of his students and had befriended him around two years ago.
