The AAP Monday announced that it will hold a mega rally against the Centre’s “unconstitutional” ordinance brought allegedly to suppress the Supreme Court’s verdict in favour of the Delhi government over the Services matter.
Announcing the rally, which will be organised at Ramlila Maidan, AAP state convenor Gopal Rai appealed to the public to join in large numbers on June 11. “The party’s aim is to unite citizens in a collective stand for democracy and safeguarding the rights of the people,” he said.
Accusing the Centre of “hijacking” the rights of Delhiites, Rai said, “After the Supreme Court’s decision to preserve the rights and grant power to the elected government over the bureaucracy, the manner in which the central government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has issued an ordinance is a betrayal of trust.”
He alleged, “Ever since this ordinance was issued, you all are seeing that the leaders of BJP are singing praises in favour of this black ordinance… The world today is watching how they flouted the apex court’s order overnight.”
Rai also alleged that the people of Delhi have been fighting since Madanlal Khurana’s time to make the city a full-fledged state. He claimed that during the Sheila Dixit government, they had the power over transfer and postings of all Group A and DANICS officers but the BJP changed the rules as soon as AAP came to power in the national capital.
“If democracy is murdered in the capital of India, then we all have to stand together. We appeal to all the people of Delhi who believe in the Constitution of the country to join us to express your anger at Ramlila Maidan,” said Rai.
On Sunday, Kejriwal met Bihar CM Nitish Kumar and his deputy Tejaswi Yadav and sought support from Opposition parties to fight the Centre’s ordinance and the BJP in the 2024 polls.
