Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday expressed his gratitude to the volunteers and supporters of the party a day after it gained the status of a National Party. Describing the AAP’s newly-acquired status of a national party in a short span of 10 years as a “miraculous and incredible” achievement, Kejriwal said it brings with it a huge responsibility as well.

Addressing party workers in New Delhi on Tuesday, Kejriwal flagged some of the major challenges that faced the party. “All the anti-national powers have come together to destroy AAP but we are not going to get scared of their threatening, gundagardi and vandalism,” Kejriwal said. “They will put you all in jail for at least 8-10 months but after that they won’t be able to do anything, you get bail.”

In a major boost for the AAP ahead of the Lok Sabha elections next year, the Election Commission recognised it as a national party on Monday.

Just 10 years after it was formed, the AAP managed to gain national party status, Kejriwal said. “No one thought that we could even make one MLA but today after more than a decade, our party has got the national party status,” a jubilant Kejriwal announced.

Outlining the principles that define the AAP’s ideology — die-hard honesty, patriotism and humanity — Kejriwal said the party’s leaders were ready to “die for the country” if needed.

“If you are in AAP, be ready to go to jail, face challenges. During our journey, we have lost many who fought for this party’s growth,” Kejriwal said, remembering his party colleagues Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain, who are currently lodged in jail.
