The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has demanded that full operations be resumed at Dr Homi Bhabha Hospital.

Located near Model Colony in Shivajinagar, the hospital was demolished over 4 years ago for renovations and has still not begun full operations. “The hospital is an important maternity centre for women around the area. As it is not open, women have to go to Kamala Nehru hospital to get beds that are scarce in number. There are many slum areas nearby in Gokhale Nagar, Hanuman Nagar, etc. This maternity hospital is required for these areas and we have raised the issue with the Pune Municipal Corporation health department Chief Dr Nina Borade” said AAP leader Mukund Kirdat.

The hospital’s reopening has been delayed due to a lift duct being of a non-standard size. This means that a lift of suitable size that fits the duct is not available. “Now they are making a special lift for this non-standard duct. Two floors are still not in use due to lack of coordination between the construction, electricity and health departments. An OPD has been opened on the first floor but it doesn’t have many facilities,” added Kirdat.

Speaking to The Indian Express Dr Nina Borade said that she had received the submission from AAP leaders. “I have personally visited the hospital after that to check the progress. It had been demolished a few years ago and the OPD had been shifted nearby, but now that the first floor is ready, the OPD has shifted back here. The work on the lift duct should be done in the next few days. The interior work on the floors is also remaining. We are coordinating with the building and the electrical departments to get the hospital up and running soon.” She said that a specific timeline for opening of the hospital could not be provided yet.
