Nine persons, including three children, of a family were killed and five injured after the vehicle they were travelling in was involved in an accident in Pilkhua area of Ghaziabad early on Wednesday.
Senior police officers said since the incident took place around 4 am, no eyewitnesses had come forward so far. But prima facie, it seems that the Maruti Eeco the family was travelling in collided with a heavy vehicle, likely a truck.
The deceased have been identified as Harveer (37), Sheila (34), Geeta (48), Mukesh (50), Priyanka (24), Rinki (23), Lavi (5), Chanchal (8) and Chahat (2). The injured have been identified as Vijay (22), Yash (2), Vansh (4), Gaurav (3) and Savita (10). Both Vijay and Vansh are critical and are in intensive care.
Senior police officers said 14 members of the family, residents of Babu Nagar in Ghaziabad, were returning after a visit to Garhmukteshwar.
“They had left on Tuesday for a puja and were returning early Wednesday. Residents of Pilkhua spotted the smashed vehicle early in the morning and alerted police. They also assisted and rescue personnel in retrieving bodies stuck between the mangled remains of the car.
A senior officer said, “We are attempting to trace the other vehicle that was involved in the accident. From the debris of the Eeco, it is clear that it collided either with a stationary vehicle from the rear or another vehicle crashed into it head on. The first possibility is more likely, because had it been an head-on collision, it would have damaged the other vehicle as well. Further probe is on.”
