"One of the cubs caught lung infection suddenly... cold from the heavy rainfall in December may be one factor but the lung inflammation could have occurred due to other reasons as well. Of the three, one was completely healthy and the condition of another was not very serious,” he added.
(Representative image)A nine-month-old female white tiger cub in Delhi Zoo succumbed due to “traumatic shock” and “acute pneumonia” on Sunday, zoo director Dr Sanjeev Kumar said on Wednesday.
Born to 9-year-old Sita in March 2024, three cubs were admitted to the hospital in July after the mother inadvertently sat on them, said Dr Abhijith Bhawal, the zoo veterinarian.
He added the cubs also suffered from Vitamin D and calcium deficiency as well as bone-related complications. While they had recovered from all ailments as well as the fractures, they remained under observation at the zoo hospital due to the cold.
“As it is winter now, we refrained from sending them back to their enclosure and kept the cubs in hospital under observation with heaters around them… we also provided them a standard diet,” said Bhawal.
