The crime Branch of Delhi Police has arrested five persons with around 500 kg of ganja worth Rs 1 crore on Saturday. The ganja was being smuggled into Delhi from Orissa inside a tanker, said the police.
The tanker was intercepted near Nangli Dairy in Uttam Nagar in West Delhi, the police added. This is probably the first time in recent years that an oil tanker being used to smuggle drugs has been intercepted by the police in Delhi, said Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (SIT-Crime Branch) Joy Tirkey.
The arrested have been identified as Surender Rai (37),the alleged gang leader hailing from Patna, his cousin Pappu Rai (35),tanker driver Anand Prakash (62),helper Dagru Singh (55) and Gulshan (29),the supplier of ganja in Delhi.
Surender, who has been in the trade for the past six years, lives in Patna and is the link between Orissa and Delhi operations of the gang, the police said. He allegedly buys ganja from one Dilip in Orissa. This was his sixth trip to Delhi this year. He relies on Gulshan,a resident of Raghubir Nagar, for sale of the contraband in the city. Each trip generates a profit of more than 250 per cent for the gang, Tirkey said.
This is the second case of ganja smuggled into the Capital from Orissa reported in the past two days. On Friday, the police arrested two persons from Mangolpuri Industrial Area allegedly with 142 kg of ganja smuggled from Orissa.
