Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Dinesh Singh on Saturday said around 50 per cent of students from colleges,such as Shri Ram College of Commerce,fail to get jobs during campus placements. An increase in employability,Singh said,was one of the reasons for DUs switch to the four-year undergraduate programme from the 2013-14 session. He said students will be taught vital data analysis skills through the compulsory foundation courses offered in the first two years of the programme.
Speaking to Shekhar Gupta,Editor-in-Chief of The Indian Express,in NDTVs Walk the Talk programme,Singh said,I am very sure that about half the students from Shri Ram College of Commerce are not picked up in the campus placement.
Singh said four to five ago,he organised a blind interview by a major firm in Mumbai,which involved 1,100 potential graduates,where only names and data for marks were mentioned. They spent so much time,but of these 1,100,they chose only three. Thats a telling sign. Not only that,they said they probably wouldnt come back and that it was quite a waste of time, Singh said.
The V-C said under the new format,students would learn business management in the foundation courses. These are means of enabling students. So theres a foundation course on business and entrepreneurship, he said.

About the inter-disciplinary nature of the four-year format,Singh said students would have more choices. A Sanskrit student,in the earlier system,had no option… He had to go with Sanskrit. Now,if he wants he can pick a minor course in Mathematics or Computer Science. All of these will increase your employability. And not just Sanskrit,with the minor he could take up a Masters in Mathematics, Singh said.
