The Delhi Traffic Police has been cracking down on commuters who have installed tinted windows on their vehicles and have issued over 4,000 challans this year, more than thrice the number of fines issued throughout last year, officers said.
Senior traffic officers said that police have initiated special drives against those installing tinted glass on their vehicles and have booked 4,348 violators till March this year, against 1,884 persons booked in 2021 and 1,295 persons prosecuted in 2022. “We have launched action against the use of tinted glasses by four-wheeler drivers with an aim to ensure safety of road users, especially women, and to prevent crime in moving vehicles,” said an officer.
Commuters driving with tinted windows are fined Rs 500 for the first offence and Rs 1,500 for subsequent offences.
Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic, Zone 2) Surender Singh Yadav said: “On area-wise analysis, it was found that Mangolpuri, Lajpat Nagar, Khajuri Khas, Tilak Nagar, Indira Gandhi International Airport, Dwarka, Shahdara, Defence Colony, Badarpur, Nangloi, among others, see the most frequent violations of tinted glass in Delhi.”
Another traffic officer, requesting anonymity, said: “As per the Supreme Court orders, the use of tinted glasses in vehicles is banned, and we keep a check on the use of any black film or any opaque material on the windscreen or the windows of a vehicle. Company-fitted tinted windows with at least 70 per cent transmission of light on the front windscreen and rear windows is permissible while 50 per cent transmission of light applies for the rest of the windows of the vehicle.”
The officer said that several instances of accused persons perpetrating illegal activities or crimes against women have been reported inside vehicles with tinted glasses. To crack down on that, traffic inspectors deployed at each traffic circle are specifically briefed to look out for cars with such illegal
modification.
“Besides prosecuting violators, road safety awareness camps are also organised from time to time in schools, colleges, major intersections, etc., and provide information in connection with road usage in the form of short films, lectures and educational literature for safe driving,” Yadav added.
