A Delhi court sentenced a man to life imprisonment for poisoning his wife with pesticide-laced water.
The court of District Judge P S Teji sentenced 38-year-old city resident Vikas Gupta on the basis of the testimony of his three minor children. They had testified that their mother started frothing at the mouth and vomiting after drinking the water Gupta had given her.
The couples son told the court that his father kept watching as his mother started vomiting and frothing at the mouth, refusing to do anything to save her.
According to the prosecution,in September 2009,Gupta had given his wife Bharti water laced with a pesticide used for killing cockroaches. The prosecution said Gupta used to abuse his wife physically and on the fateful day,Gupta gave her a glass of water mixed with pesticide, following an argument.
The prosecution said Gupta murdered his wife and then took his wife to the hospital to escape suspicion.
It has already been established that it was the accused (Gupta) who made the woman drink the pesticide after mixing it in water. The medical evidence and the FSL report establishes the case of prosecution that the accused murdered his wife by administering poison to her, said the court.
The court, however, declined to award death penalty to Gupta saying that the case did not fall in the rarest of the rare category. It awarded Gupta a sentence of life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10,000 noting that he has three children and parents to support.
