32-year-old shot by Gurgaon police in ‘self-defence’, injured

The four men, along with two others who were arrested earlier, were allegedly involved in an attempt to kill a man.

A 32-year-old man was shot by a Gurgaon Police personnel, after he allegedly opened fire at a police team which was pursuing him and his associates, in sector 10 on Wednesday.

The men were wanted for their alleged involvement in a case of attempted murder, said the police. The police had earlier received information that the four persons — identified as Deepak (23), Rahul (24), Yogender (23), and Dharmender (32) — would be in Sector 10.

A team of seven members, headed by Sub-inspector Pradyuman, was formed, said the police. The team decided to intercept the Santro car — in which the suspects were reportedly traveling in — at Hingri Chowk.

“The police car began pursuing the Santro, and forced it to a stop at Hingri Chowk at 2.15 pm on Wednesday. Dharmender got out of the car and opened fire at the police van. The bullet hit the door near the driver’s seat, though no one was injured. SI Pradyuman, who was at the wheel of the police van, began chasing Dharmender on foot. Meanwhile, the other policemen caught hold of Dharmender’s associates, who were seated inside the Santro,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police, Crime, Rajesh Kumar.

He added, “Dharmender, while trying to escape, again fired at the police party. SI Pradyuman fired a shot in self-defence. The bullet hit Dharmender in the thigh. He was rushed to civil hospital near the bus stand in sector 10, where he was operated on. He and his associates have been arrested on charges of attempt to murder”.

The four men, along with two others who were arrested earlier, were allegedly involved in an attempt to kill a man, identified as Narender Lumberdar Khalsa, on August 18 in Sadar Gurgaon area, said the police.
