Twenty-four restaurants have been booked in Delhi for allegedly serving alcohol to customers without a liquor licence, Excise department officials said on Saturday.
During a drive, conducted between January to April 30 across the city, including West Delhi and North West areas, the department had conducted around 40 raids. “During this drive, 24 restaurants were found serving liquor without liquor licence. The restaurants only had licence to serve food. The liquor found was seized and FIRs were lodged against the restaurants,” said a senior official.
In April, after a meeting with Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, excise department officials had launched an extensive drive against supply of illegal liquor and at premises that do not have liquor licence, said officials.
According to data, while 15 such FIRs were lodged between January and April in 2024, 9 cases were registered in 2023.
Officials said that currently, around 1,000 hotels, clubs and restaurants in Delhi operate with a valid licence issued by the Excise department.
“However, a significant number of non-licensed premises also operate in the city. Due to this, the government faces loss of revenue… Moreover, it increases the risk of circulation of Non Duty Paid Liquor, facilitating illegal trade,” said an official.
