An invitation to yoga guru Ramdev to be the keynote speaker at the valedictory ceremony of the 22nd International Vedanta Congress, being held at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), has been opposed strongly by student bodies. Many have threatened to hold mass agitations if the invitation is not withdrawn.
“The silent right-wing onslaught on JNU continues. It is very unfortunate to know that JNU — a co-organiser in the ‘22nd International Congress of Vedanta’ being held from December 27-30 — has allowed Ramdev to be invited as a keynote speaker on the 30th…. It does not befit the stature of an academic institution such as JNU to have persons with such a questionable and shameful background address an academic gathering,” said JNUSU vice president Shehla Rashid.
The seminar is being organised by the Special Centre for Sanskrit Studies, JNU, in collaboration with Institute of Advanced Sciences, Dartmouth USA, Centre for Indic Studies, University of Massachusetts.
“JNU had been one of the prime targets of the RSS-BJP during the previous NDA regime as well… Let us be clear that the invitation to Ramdev is part of the systematic intrusion of Hindutva agents into the academic spaces,” said a statement by the Students’ Federation of India.
