Taking forward Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to build toilets for girls in every school, 216 toilets are to be constructed in government girls’ and co-educational schools in Gurgaon Lok Sabha constituency. Central Planning and Defence Minister of State Rao Inderjit Singh on Wednesday announced that Rs 70 lakh would be released for the construction of these toilets.
The minister said that the various district education departments had sent a report on the schools that did not have toilets for girls and those schools that have toilets but are non-functional.
The deputy commissioners of all the districts falling under the Gurgaon Lok Sabha constituency have been asked to check the same.
According to sources, a major chunk of the funds will be allocated to schools in Gurgaon, Mewat and Rewari districts.
“In the first phase, most of the toilets will be constructed for girls in government schools,” Gurgaon Deputy Commissioner T L Satya Prakash said. The DC also told Newsline that around 150 toilets will be constructed in Gurgaon district, which comprises of four blocks — Sohna, Pataudi, Badshahpur and Gurgaon city.
However, District Education Officer Manoj Kaushik said the department is yet to receive any such notification. “As far as toilets in both high school and senior secondary schools for girls are concerned, they are all functional. However, I agree that we still require toilets in these two divisions,” Kaushik, who looks after 69 senior secondary schools and 49 high schools in Gurgaon district, said.
A senior official told Newsline that out of the 150 toilets, most of them would be constructed in primary schools of the district.
