As many as 20 policemen, including a deputy superintendent of police, have been named by a Ghaziabad court in an alleged fake encounter case that occurred in Bisrat village on January 7. Allegations of the incident being a fake encounter is currently being probed by the authorities concerned.

Earlier this year,a case of motorcycle theft in Pawan Nagar had led the Surajpur Kotwali police to Bisrat. Though police reportedly managed to corner two alleged thieves, their exact location could not be identified due to the heavy fog cover. In the end,one of the persons was shot dead by the police while the other managed to flee.

However, villagers said the police were unable to recover any stolen motorcycles, and there didn’t seem to be any sign of a struggle either. Soon after the person was killed, the police cremated him. Later, the police identified the man as 23-year-old Sheru,a resident of Bagpat.

Sheru’s family, which recently moved to Loni from Bagpat, was in the process of registering a missing complaint for him. According to them,he was last seen in Ghaziabad on January 3,while he was going to a court to attend a hearing in a case lodged against him.

Sheru had recently arrived from Guwahati,Assam, where he worked as a truck helper. His father alleged that the police had even allegedly recovered a phone book from him, with the number of all his important contacts, but did not contact them after his death. Suspecting foul play, they met many senior advocates and Human Rights Commission members, who helped them lodge a case in Ghaziabad. On June 1,the court issued an order against DSP Rahul Kumar, besides SHO R Joshi and the other policemen who were present there.

However, police alleged that Sheru’s family is trying to manipulate the case as the body has already been cremated. “If there is any discrepany in the police account,I’m sure justice will be done,” said Gautam Budh Nagar SP (Rural) R K Jolly.
