A 16-year-old girl committed suicide by hanging herself at her home in Chijaarsi village, Noida Phase III, on Friday evening. She was reportedly “upset” over being “stalked and harassed” by three men over the past few days. Police said the girl had left behind a suicide note.
The incident occurred at about 5.30 pm when her family was not home. The girl’s father Ashok Yadav alleged they had filed an FIR on October 13 on the stalking incident and accused the Gautam Budh Nagar police of negligence for not taking prompt action.
Police too agreed that there were loopholes in their investigation and suspended a sub-inspector for not conducting the inquiry “seriously”.
Anoop Kumar, circle officer (CO) 2nd City, Gautam Budh Nagar said the accused have been identified as Rahul, Raja alias Halna and Shivam. Police said Halna was arrested on Saturday while a search is on to nab the other two.
Recounting the incident, Yadav said, “My daughter said she was being harassed by three persons from the neighbourhood for the past 10 days. We found a suicide note in her bag and panicked. We went to the station to lodge a complaint… It was only after the SP (City) intervened that an FIR was registered on October 13 against the three accused,” added Yadav.
In her suicide note, the girl said Halna was harassing her on the behest of her neighbour, Shukla. “His family instigated Halna to harass me. He used to stalk me when I was on the way to school. He used to report everything to Shuklas. The family is responsible for my death,” said the note.
The CO said, “We have suspended the Chijaarsi station in-charge for not informing seniors that a suicide note had been recovered from the girl.”
However, he added, “It is not completely true that police did not act on the issue. We conducted raids on the houses of the accused, but they were absconding.”
