For 10 years he changed several hideouts, over a dozen mobile phone numbers and even jobs to evade arrest. However this 29-year-old gangrape accused was finally arrested by the staff of Greater Kailash police station,Southeast Delhi,on Saturday.
The accused,Manoj (29),a native of UP,had in 2003 allegedly raped a minor along with an associate in Khajuri Khas. The victim, who was then 14 years old,had alleged that she had come to Delhi to stay with her elder sister. She was gangraped by two of the tenants of the same house.
“On the night of June 25,2003,she was sleeping on the ground floor with her niece, while her sister and her husband were sleeping on the terrace. Around 2 am,Manoj and Shamshad, the two tenants, told her that her sister was calling her upstairs and that it was urgent. When she was on her way to the terrace, they pulled her into an empty room and raped her,” a senior police officer said.
When the victim tried to call for help, they gagged and raped her by turn, the officer said. The accused threatened to kill her and asked her to keep quiet about the incident. “They left the girl in a dark corner and fled the spot. The girl then told her sister about the incident. A medical examination had confirmed rape and a case had been registered,” the officer said.
While the police was able to arrest Shamshad,Manoj managed to slip through.
“We kept tracking his movement, but since he continued to change his locations,it became difficult to nab him,” police said.
It was later found that he had worked for almost 5 year as a tailor in Khajuri Khas and fled to Kanpur after committing the crime. After a few years,he shifted to Jaipur and started working as a shopkeeper. He remained in hiding their for over three years.
“Our proclaimed offender team had been developing information on Manoj for years. Finally we received an input that he was staying in Jalalabad with a fake address and name and was working as a carpenter. A team was immediately sent to Jalalabad and the accused was arrested,” a senior police officer said.
