In a bid to strengthen family courts in the national capital and bring down pending cases, the Delhi government on Monday decided to elevate 10 judicial officers as principal judges. Now,each of the 11 family courts will be headed by a principal judge, while earlier there existed only one principal judge as head of all family courts.

The decision was announced after a meeting of the Delhi cabinet on Monday. Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said,“It was felt necessary to appoint one principal judge each in 11 family courts for the distribution of the business of the court among the judges. This will go a long way in making the functioning of family courts smoother and faster.”
