Compressor blast triggers building collapse in Moti Nagar, two dead

Efforts are on to clear rubble amid fears that some people may be trapped.

Two persons, including a six-year-old boy, were killed and nine others injured after a three-storey residential building in Moti Nagar collapsed following a compressor explosion on Wednesday morning.

The Fire Service officials received a call around 7.45 am alerting them about the incident. Several fire tenders were immediately rushed to the spot. Police identified the dead as Anand Shashinath (20) and Armaan (6). “The injured persons, including three children and a woman, have been admitted to Acharya Shree Bhikshu Hospital in Moti Nagar,” a police officer said.

“Anand, a labourer, received injuries to his head was declared brought dead. The body of Armaan, the son of another labourer, was recovered from the debris three hours after the incident, The other injured are Anita (35), her two daughters Kamal (6) and Kajal (7), her son Rajesh (5), Charan Singh (42), Ajay (20), Asim (20), Simran (17) and Babloo (16). All the injured are stable,” the officer said.

According to police, a fan assembling unit was functioning out of the ground floor of the building. It required a powerful compressor for various purposes, including painting the assembled products.

“It was the compressor in the assembling unit which exploded. The impact made the top two floors collapse,” the officer said.

The building owner, Karanjeet, a part-time businessman, was also injured in the collapse. Police said Karanjeet lived alone in one of the rooms on the top floor. The other rooms were rented out to labourers and families who worked in the assembling unit on the ground floor.

A case was registered at Moti Nagar police station against unknown persons for negligent conduct with respect to machinery and culpable homicide.

In another incident in Outer Delhi’s Samaypur Badli area, a labourer was killed and another injured after the wall of a house collapsed on them on Wednesday. The labourers, police said, were digging a basement on the adjacent plot. The dead man has been identified as Sunil. The injured labourer Raju has been admitted to a hospital.
