One person was killed and four others injured on Wednesday after the SUV they were travelling in crashed into a divider on the Yamuna Expressway,lost its balance and toppled over the edge of the expressway some 40 feet above the ground.
Police said the Scorpio was being driven at a high speed. It rammed into the crash barrier and somersaulted several times before veering off the edge of the expressway.
For over two hours,the passengers were trapped inside the overturned vehicle hanging over the edge of the road.
Police said the accident took place around 10 am. The vehicle was on its way from Agra to Greater Noida and had five passengers,including a Shikohabad-based family of three.
The driver of the vehicle,Sachin (30),died in the accident. Vinita Sidhana (40),Sanidhya Sidhana (18) and Bhagya Narain Dubey (45) sustained injuries. According to the hospital authorities,while Sanidhya and Rajesh are stable,Dubey is in the ICU with severe internal injuries.
SP (Greater Noida ) Brijesh Kumar said they rushed emergency services to the spot and started the rescue operations immediately.
The left arm of Vinita was cut off in the accident and a station house officer was also sustained injuries during the rescue.
Police said Vinita was rescued first and rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre with the severed limb.
Sanidhya and Dubey were rescued next. Rajesh Sidhana (45),who was in the front seat,was rescued last, an officer said.
The SUV was travelling on the loop that leads to the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway. On the loop,the car presumably lost control and hit the divider between the two opposing loops. It somersaulted thrice and halted precariously over the edge of the road in an overturned position, SSP (Noida) Preetinder Singh said.
