To encourage use of public transport in the suburbs by cutting the number of buses one needs to change to reach the city, the BMTC started 62 buses Monday on Hosur Road under Bangalore Integrated Grid (BIG).
The buses marked Trunk 3 will operate every two-three minutes between the central Kempegowda Bus Station and Electronic City,KBS and Chandapura and KBS and Attibele Circle.
To simplify identification, the buses will carry route numbers followed by the first letter of names of their suburban destinations. So,a big trunk from KBS to Electronic City will be marked 3E,KBS to Chandapura 3C and KBS to Attibele 3A.
Passengers may proceed to their villages on another batch of 40 feeder buses named Sampark Sarige that will run every 10-20 minutes, said BMTC managing director Anjum Parwez.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who flagged off the service at the Vidhana Soudha campus, said the state government had sent a proposal to the Centre for purchase of 2,500 additional buses for Bangalore under Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission.
