Third front only after 2014 polls: Yechury

He was addressing students at Delhi University’s St Stephen’s College as part of the Mukarji Dialogue lecture series 2013.

CPM politburo member Sitaram Yechury Monday did not deny the likelihood of a third front emerging in the future, but said any such front is likely to take shape only after the 2014 general election.

He was addressing students at Delhi University’s St Stephen’s College as part of the Mukarji Dialogue lecture series 2013.

Asked about the possibility of his party offering a third front for next year’s polls,Yechury said,“Yes,I am offering it (a third front). However, the exact shape of it will take place only post elections.”

The statement came four days after senior leaders of CPM,SP and JD(U) met to discuss the holding of a convention against communalism.

Yechury said a convention against non-Congress and non-communal parties has been called on October 30 where AIADMK leader and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa as well as SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav are expected to attend.

In response to another question, the CPM leader said,“The third alternative has become as much of a joke as the BJP talking secularism… (but) in India,no arrangement which formed the government was formed before the elections.”

“A new political raga has emerged, the NaMo raga…what India requires is alternative policies and not alternative parties…not ‘neta’ but ‘neeti’ is required,” he said.
