The CBI,which filed a chargesheet against B S Yeddyurappa in an illegal mining case last October, has written to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to initiate seizure of assets acquired by the former chief minister and his family allegedly using bribe money.
Sources said the ED had initiated the process of identifying final use of nearly Rs 40 crore allegedly received by BSY and family to facilitate illegal mining that would culminate in the seizure of assets in about two months.
The development comes even as BSY readies to rejoin the BJP before the Lok Sabha election next year.
Sources said the attachment of his and family wealth was likely to conclude just before the polls.
They said an engineering college run by a trust of the family, which received a portion of the Rs 40 crore, and other properties bought using bribe money might be attached.
The CBI had chargesheeted BSY,two sons,a son-in-law,JSW Steel and its four Bellary based affiliates on October 16,2012,for criminal conspiracy, cheating, forgery and corruption in a case related to payment of Rs 40 crore to the family and a trust run by it to grant iron ore mining favours in 2010.
The chargesheet says Rs 20 crore was deposited in the personal bank accounts of BSYs sons B Y Raghavendra,a BJP MP,and B Y Vijendra, and his son-in-law Sohan Kumar between August and September 2010 by JSW affiliate South West Mining Company, shortly after the then Chief Minister banned mining exports in July 2010.
The CBI also found that Rs 20 crore was received by the Prerana Educational and Social Trust run by Raghavendra and Vijendra to facilitate waiver of government dues and push pending mining lease applications. It found that part of this money was transferred to Vivekananda Trust where BSY himself was a trustee.
The ED is also set to attach wealth of actor-MLA C P Yogeshwar, who has jumped from the Congress to the BJP to the SP in the past five years. His company Megacity (Bangalore) Developers and Builders is accused of defrauding investors to the tune of Rs 37 crore.
The property of mining baron and another former BJP minister G Janardhan Reddy, who has been chargesheeted in an illegal mining case against his Associated Mining Company, will also be attached.
Illegal mining by the AMC using a licence obtained fraudulently is alleged to have caused the state a loss of Rs 480 crore.
The ED had in December 2012 attached shares and assets worth Rs 884 crore in the Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC) case involving Janardhan Reddy after a CBI probe revealed the OMC illegally mined iron ore worth Rs 884.13 crore between 2007 and 2010.
