A 26-year-old Ranji aspirant cricketer was killed on the spot after the two-wheeler he was riding with a friend hit an electric pole near Shivanahalli Junction Sunday early morning. The police claimed Umesh Kharvi,an employee of a private firm, and friend Mithun were in an inebriated state and trying daredevilry on a footpath.
Mithun, who sustained minor injuries, allegedly told the police Umesh was speeding along West of Chord Road towards Shivanahalli Junction. Trying to avoid a tree near a liquor shop at the junction,he lost balance and hit the pole head first. Minutes before the accident, traffic police had removed the barricade there.
Umesh was tossed almost 10 feet in the air and hit the ground hard. Not wearing a helmet,he bled to death, an officer at the Vijayanagara police station said.
The resident of Gayatrinagar in Subramanyanagar was a native of Kundapur. The right-hand batsman had represented Karnataka in under-17,under-19,under-22 and south zone cricket.
