A City Armed Reserve (CAR) constable guarding stamp paper scam kingpin Abdul Karim Telgi has been arrested for allegedly smuggling mobile phones into the central prison in Parappana Agrahara.

Venkaiah Meti (46),a native of Bagalkot,is an ex-serviceman. He was deployed to guard Telgi about a month ago.

The Parappana Agrahara police said Meti was caught red-handed around 7 am Monday when he was entering the prison.

Prison staff found three new mobile phones on him.

Meti could not explain why he was carrying the phones and was reported to Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Prisons A Raja, who filed a complaint against him at the Parappana Agrahara police station.

“We have registered a case and arrested the constable. We are investigating who he was planning to supply the phones,” a police officer said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (CAR-south) K D Malligowda said Meti served in the army for more than 15 years and joined the police department as a constable five years ago under the ex-servicemen quota.

“We deployed him to guard Telgi because of his services background. We never expected this,” he said.

Telgi is infamous for using mobile phones in prison. During 2002-03,a special investigation team tapped a number of phones used by him to unearth the true extent of his fake stamp paper racket.
