The Bangalore police will Friday make a fresh attempt to obtain custody of Indian Mujahideen (IM) operative Yasin Bhatkal to officially investigate his role in the Chinnaswamy stadium blasts of April 17,2010. The Delhi special cell custody of Yasin in the September 13,2008,serial blasts in the national capital ends Friday.

The Bangalore police have obtained a body warrant for Yasin after naming him a key accused in the stadium blasts chargesheet filed in July 2012 on the basis of investigations carried out following the arrest of eight other accused.

Since Yasin was arrested on August 29,2013,they have made several attempts to obtain his custody but have had to wait as the National Investigation Agency and the Delhi special cell got primacy.

The Bangalore police want to establish several facts in the stadium blasts case which only Yasin is privy to,including purchase of timers from Mumbai for the five bombs planted, source of explosives and how a Tumkur house was rented to prepare for the explosions.

The synchronised blasts around the cricket stadium had occurred before an IPL match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians. Two bombs went off at around 3:30 pm,just before the match was to start at 4 pm,injuring five people. The three bombs that failed were found around the stadium gates over the next 24 hours and were defused.

Investigations have revealed that Yasin and aide Qateel Ahmed Siddiqui planted the bombs. They were supported in the operation by Mohammed Aftab Alam alias Farook and Gayur Ahmad Jamali of Dharbhanga in Bihar.

The arrest of Siddiqui,Farook,Jamali and a few others in New Delhi in November 2011 unravelled the plot.

Yasin, during questioning following his arrest in August, corroborated their accounts documented by the police in the chargesheet. Siddiqui,Farook,Jamali claimed preparations for the blasts were conducted under the leadership of Yasin alias Imran alias Shah Rukh at a rented house in Tumkur.

Sources said the Bangalore police were keen to fill certain gaps in the probe as well as strengthen evidence in the case by establishing the source of explosives, timers and funding for the blasts.
