Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel’s government digitally transferred over Rs 15 crore to cattle-rearers, women self-help groups (SHGs), and ‘gauthan’ committees as part of the Godhan Nyay Yojna (GNY) initiative on August 5.

The scheme, launched in July 2020, involves the procurement of cow dung at Rs 2 per kilogram in gauthans, which is then utilized to create vermicompost, promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

During the ceremony held at the Chief Minister’s official residence, Baghel highlighted the widespread acclaim received by the GNY scheme nationwide. He emphasized how the initiative has bolstered the self-reliance of women in SHGs and increased farmers’ interest in cattle rearing.

“Of the Rs 15.29 crore, Rs 5.60 crore was transferred to accounts of cattle rearers in lieu of cow dung sold by them in gauthans (day care centres for cattle in villages). Besides, Rs 9.69 crore was given to gauthan committees and women SHGs which are associated with gauthans under the scheme,” a state government official said.

Of the total amount transferred, Rs 5.60 crore was credited to the accounts of cattle rearers for the cow dung they sold in gauthans. Additionally, Rs 9.69 crore was distributed to gauthan committees and women SHGs associated with the program. This brings the total disbursement under the GNY scheme to an impressive Rs 541.66 crore, showcasing the government’s dedication to supporting local communities and fostering eco-friendly practices.
