a 19-year-old girl, who got married on Wednesday, committed suicide by hanging on Thursday morning in Kumaraswamy Layout after her husband reportedly tried to force her to consummate their marriage on their first night together.

Her husband,in a statement to the police, said that he had asked her to consummate their marriage despite her apprehensions, resulting in an argument between the two.

The police have registered a case of unnatural death as the girl’s parents did not press charges against him.

G Pushpa and Hanumantharaya,25,a barber, had been engaged four months prior to their arranged marriage on Wednesday. While they were engaged, the couple’s courtship was largely restricted to conversations on the telephone.

Following the wedding at a on Wednesday morning, the newly-weds first went to Hanumantharaya’s house in Kempegowda Nagar before returning to the bride’s house in Bendre Nagar to spend the night. The house was very small and guests were sleeping in the hall while the couple were given a bedroom.

According to the police, the couple were not supposed to consummate their marriage on that night due to some religious beliefs and they were scheduled to do so a week later.

However, when they were in the bedroom Hanumantharaya reportedly tried to force Pushpa and got angry when she resisted. He then allegedly questioned her character. Police surmise that this argument was her reason for taking the step.

Sarasamma,Pushpa’s mother told the police that her daughter woke up around 6.30 am,locked her husband in the bathroom and committed suicide. Pushpa was a second year pre-university student.

Police said the exact reason was yet to be ascertained. “We have registered a case based on the complaint lodged by Govindaraju,Pushpa’s father. Her parents have not accused Hanumantharaya so we have registered a case of suicide and the investigation is ongoing,” a police officer said.
