Chennai, Tamil Nadu News Today: A day after O Panneerselvam wrote a letter to Edappadi K Palaniswami, offering his will to sign the authorisation forms A and B for fielding All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) candidates in the byelection to the local bodies in Tamil Nadu, EPS, the party’s headquarters secretary, on Thursday shot back saying the letter of OPS, the party treasurer, could not be accepted.

New coronavirus cases in Tamil Nadu increased to 1,827 Wednesday from 1,484 the previous day, taking the state tally to 34,73,116. The active cases mounted to 10,033 from 8,970 on Tuesday. The toll, however, continued to remain at 38,026, as no fatalities were reported today also, according to a bulletin from the state health department.

As the state witnessed a rising trend, Health and Family Welfare Minister Ma Subramanian appealed to the people to strictly comply with the government instructions on wearing face masks and maintaining social distancing. “Don’t lower the guard. Continue to wear face masks and maintain social distancing,” the minister appealed after launching a massive drive to distribute face masks for free to the members of the public at Luz Corner, Mylapore, here.

In his letter to OPS, EPS noted the amendments made to the party’s bylaw in the executive committee meeting last December were not recognised in the general council meeting held on June 23 and have now expired. Hence the letter written by OPS as the party's coordinator was not valid, EPS said in his reply.

Man killed as soil caves in during Chennai Metro rail work; 3 booked

A 45-year-old worker was killed after soil caved in while he was working underground for laying Chennai Metro rail project’s sewage pipeline at Medavakkam in Chennai. The deceased was identified as K Ravi from Salem. He entered a 10-foot-deep pit allegedly without any safety gears as part of the works on the second phase of the metro rail project.

According to the police, the co-workers rescued Ravi and gave him water to drink but since he had breathing difficulties, he was immediately taken to a local hospital and declared dead on arrival there. Read more

Chennai school teacher held under POCSO Act for sexually harassing students

A 45-year-old school teacher in the city was on Wednesday arrested for sexual harassment of students over a period of four months, police said. The man had sent obscene messages to students, touched them inappropriately and had sexually harassed children, police added.

Following a tip-off, District Child Protection Unit officials held inquiries in the school and lodged a complaint with an All Women Police Station in the city, a police release said. Police officials held inquiries and a probe led to a disclosure that the teacher had sexually harassed students since March. He had also sent obscene messages to them over phone. Read more

Madras HC grants pre-arrest bail to police officer in cheating case

The Madras High Court has granted conditional advance bail to A Sivakumar (49), then Assistant Commissioner of Police in Thirumangalam range here, who apprehended arrest under various sections of the IPC, including cheating and the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act and absconding hitherto. Justice Dr G Jayachandran granted the relief to the suspended cop while passing orders on a criminal original petition from Sivakumar on recently. Read more

Chennai corporation to hire transgenders as drone operators

The Greater Chennai Corporation in a council meeting on Tuesday adopted a resolution to appoint transgenders as operators of drones that spray larvicide to curb the mosquito menace in the city. The members of the trans community would be appointed through the Tamil Nadu Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Corporation on contract basis for a year. They were provided training with the assistance NGOs fighting for the welfare of the transgender community. Read more

Chennai power cut: These areas in Chennai will face a power cut today

The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) has announced that power will be suspended in parts of Chennai today in Mylapore, Tambaram, Anna Nagar, Avadi, Ambattur, Adyar/Enjambakkam, Taramani, Guindy, Sothuperambedu, Velachery, KK Nagar, Tondairpet/Tolgate, Red hills/Attanthangal, Perambur for carrying out maintenance work in the city.

Parts of Chennai will face a power shutdown from 9 am to 2 pm, with supply expected to resume before 2 pm if the work is completed. Here's the full list

File charge-sheet in DA case against former AIADMK minister: Madras HC

The Madras High Court on Wednesday directed the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) to file a charge-sheet as quickly as possible in a disproportionate assets case registered against former Tamil Nadu minister K P Anbalagan of the AIADMK and his family members. Justice N Sathish Kumar gave the direction, while disposing of a criminal original petition from one M Krishnamoorthy, an AIADMK functionary in Dharmapuri district, praying for a direction to the vigilance to proceed and complete with the investigation and file the final report in the case pending before the Dharmapuri unit of DVAC.

In his complaint lodged before the DVAC in October, 2021, Krishnamoorthy had alleged that the minister had committed misappropriation of public funds running to several crores of rupees by misusing his official capacity and purchased several properties in the name of his family members and close relatives and benamies in and around Tamil Nadu and other states. Since no action was taken on his complaint, he filed a petition in the High Court for a direction in this connection. (PTI)

Food safety department officials on Wednesday raided shops in Koyambedu Wholesale Market complex in Chennai and seized several tonnes of fruits that were artificially ripened using chemicals. As Covid cases go up, TN Health Minister Subramanian asks public to wear masks

In the wake of the gradual rise in Covid-19 cases in Tamil Nadu, state Health Minister Ma Subramanian Wednesday urged the public not to let their guard down and continue following safety measures, including mandatory wearing of masks in public places.

A drive to distribute over 50,000 masks free of cost to the public was held on the day on behalf of the state health department in Chennai. Close to 150 volunteers, including nurses from the health department, were deployed to distribute the masks. Health Minister Subramanian, Chennai Mayor R Priya, Mylapore MLA T Velu and other officers participated in the event. Read more

Local polls: AIADMK workers bear brunt of intra-party bickering

Several AIADMK workers who aspired to contest local polls slated to be held next month to fill casual vacancies, have been left high and dry as they could not furnish requisite forms to authorities to fight elections on party's behalf in view of the bickering between camps led by O Panneerselvam and K Palaniswami.

On the prospects of party men fighting July 9 polls, a party veteran and former Minister said the party had already 'advised' district level functionaries to coordinate with district secretaries to submit the forms.

The leader told PTI that they would have 'submitted forms' and information on such matters needed to be ascertained from local and regional level office-bearers. (PTI)

Chennai worker dies of asphyxiation while clearing a blocked sewer, contractor arrested

A 26-year-old man, who was engaged in cleaning a drain in Madhavaram in north Chennai Tuesday, died of asphyxiation. The condition of another worker, who also fainted while trying to rescue his coworker, is said to be critical. The police have arrested contractor M Prakash, 53, and his supervisor V Vinish, 33, in connection with the incident and later remanded them.

According to the police, the deceased identified as Nelson, and another worker Ravikumar, 40, of Thanjavur was engaged by a private contract worker to clear a blockage in a sewer on Muthumariamman Koil street in Madhavaram. Read more
