Tamil Nadu Minister K N Nehru initiates work for pedestrian plaza in Nungambakkam

Tamil Nadu Minister for Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department K N Nehru on Friday initiated the work for a pedestrian plaza on the Khader Nawaz Khan Road at Nungambakkam in Chennai.
The minister alongside DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran, Chennai Mayor R Priya, Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Commissioner J Radhakrishnan also inspected canal restoration and rainwater drainage works in the city.
According to the Greater Chennai Corporation officials, the pedestrian plaza is set to be built at a cost of Rs 19.81 crores under the World Bank’s Chennai City Partnership programme and GCC Capital Fund.
The pedestrian plaza is set to be built with infrastructure facilities such as cobblestone carriageway, disabled-friendly pathways, a dedicated duct for electricity lines, a new storm water drain, decorative lights, seating, planters, and lighting bollards among others.
“Through this project, safe pedestrian movement, upgraded road safety, proper parking management, and public space for all age groups, is ensured,” the authorities noted.
The project is set to be completed within 18 months.

Further, the authorities visited the ongoing restoration work at Mambalam canal near TUFIDCO that is being carried out at a cost of Rs 7.50 crore. The officials claimed the works are expected to be completed before September.
Nehru and other officials also inspected the construction work of the flyover between South Usman Road and CIT Nagar in the Kodambakkam zone. The 1.2 km long flyover is being built at a cost of 131 crores. The construction work had commenced in March. The civic body claims that around two lakh people would be benefited through this flyover and around 40,000 vehicles are expected to commute on this daily.

Further, the officials looked at the ongoing Storm Water Drain (SWD) work in the Kodambakkam zone. Minister Nehru had asked officials to expedite the works before the onset of northeast monsoon.
