Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Thursday hailed the Supreme Court verdict upholding the laws allowing the traditional bull-taming sport of Jallikattu and said that it was a resounding win for the government’s sustained legal struggle.
“It is worth writing in golden letters in the history of Tamil Nadu that the Constitution bench of the Supreme Court has ruled that Jallikattu, a sport that expresses the bravery and culture of Tamil Nadu, is not prohibited!” Stalin said on Twitter.
“We are building a huge Jallikattu ground in Alanganallur (at Madurai) and we will celebrate this victory on Pongal in a grand manner,” Stalin added.

The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld amendments made by Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Maharashtra to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, to allow Jallikattu and Kambala and said that the amendments did not violate the Constitution and the Supreme Court’s 2014 ruling banning Jallikattu.

Tamil Nadu Law Minister S Regupathy noted that all five judges gave a unanimous verdict. “This is a historical verdict. The Supreme Court has accepted the arguments of lawyers representing the government that Jallikattu is part of Tamils’ culture and tradition. This sport cannot be separated from us,” he said.
Commenting on the state government’s plan to conduct the Jallikattu events in future, the law minister said they had been conducting the traditional event following all the rules and regulations prescribed by the Supreme Court. He said there is no cruelty to animals and the safety of the players and the bulls has always been ensured by the government.
The verdict was celebrated in Madurai.
CPI(M) leader Su Venkatesan said it was a happy occasion as both the bull and the bull-tamer have won together.
