On the occasion of International Museum Day, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin Thursday laid the foundation stone of the Porunai museum in Tirunelveli district through a video conference from the secretariat in Chennai.

In September 2021, while addressing the Assembly, Stalin had announced the plans to set up the museum with world-class facilities. The land for the museum, about 13.02 acre, was identified at the Melapalayam-Reddiarpatti hills along the national highway in Palayamkottai taluk’s Kulavanigarpuram village.

The museum is expected to be built at a cost Rs 33.2 crore on a total area of 55,000 square feet. According to a statement issued by the government, the museum will showcase rare artefacts found during the excavation at Adichanallur, which is considered to be the cradle of the Tamil civilisation, Korkai, the ancient port town of the Pandya kings during the Sangam era and Sivakalai, the excavation site which proved that Tamils knew how to use iron.
