With only a few days left for New Year’s Eve, when large numbers of people are expected to throng Marina Beach, Elliot’s Beach and other areas in Chennai, the traffic police on Thursday announced traffic arrangements to ensure accident-free celebrations.
According to the police, all the flyovers in the city will be closed for traffic from 10 pm on December 31, 2023, till 6 am on January 1, 2024. Foreshore Service Road will be closed from 7 pm on Sunday to 6 am on Monday. Parking of vehicles will also not be allowed along the road from 7 pm and the vehicles will be allowed to exit only through Lighthouse Junction.
The stretch from Kamarajar Salai to the Victory War Memorial to the lighthouse will be closed from 8 pm on December 31 to 6 am on January 1.
Vehicles coming from the Adyar side and headed towards Kamarajar Salai will be diverted at Greenways Road Junction and South Canal Road Junction towards Mandaveli, RA Puram 2nd Main Road, RK Mutt Road and Luz Mylapore
Similarly, vehicles coming from the Dr RK Salai side and going to Kamarajar Salai will be diverted at VM Street Junction towards RK Mutt Road, Luz Junction, Mandaveli and South Canal Bank Road to reach Santhome High Road and Greenways Road.
Vehicles coming from the Parrys side and headed to Kamarajar Salai will be diverted at RBI Subway (North) towards North Fort Wall Road, Muthusamy Road, Muthusamy Bridge, Wallajah Point and Anna Salai to reach their destinations.
Also, vehicular traffic towards Kamarajar Salai will not be allowed from Wallajah Point, Swami Sivananda Salai near Doordarshan Kendra, Wallajah Salai near Victoria Hostel Road, Bharathi Salai x Victoria Hostel Road, Dr Besant Road (near MRTS), Lloyds Road x Natesan Road and from Natesan Road x Dr RK Salai junction.
The entire loop road from South Canal Bank Road up to Lighthouse Junction will be closed for traffic.
MTC buses bound to the north side from Greenways Point will be diverted at South Canal Bank Road, Mandaveli, VK Iyer Road, St. Mary’s Road, Luz, Royapettah 1 Point, Cathedral Road and Anna Salai to reach their destination.
Buses coming from the north side to proceed towards the south will be diverted at RBI North to reach Wallajah Point through Muthusamy Point, Anna Salai, Anna Rotary, Cathedral Road, VM Street junction, Luz Junction and Mandaveli Junction to reach South Canal Road.
Parking arrangements have been made at Swami Sivananda Salai, Wallajah Road, Bharathi Salai, PWD Office Road, Dr Besant Road, Lloyds Road and on the Queen Mary’s College campus.
